The Ins and Outs of Design for Millennials

If you’re a Millennial, born between the 1980s and ’90s, you represent the largest population segment in the United States. Research has shown that many of your unique experiences shape not only attitudes and expectations but also preferences for home design style. Looking to freshen up your home? Seek inspiration from some popular design trends among Millennials.

Go Neutral

For many Millennials, interior color schemes have been influenced by social media platforms like TikTok. The color beige gained a lot of traction during the beginning stages of the pandemic, when homeowners had the time and energy to take on DIY projects. Beige continues to be a popular choice—a stroll through any Target store will reveal enough beige accents and accessories to decorate your entire house.

A little warning, however: The TikTok-inspired phrase “sad beige” pokes fun at the obsession over this neutral hue, perhaps indicating that it’s beginning to fall out of favor.

Color Makes a Comeback

Many other Millennials are adding pops of color back into their homes. They are going for vibrant color palettes that reflect their energy. In 2024, bright oranges, reds, playful purples, and earthy greens are the leading trend colors. Furniture designer Alma De Luce says, “The trend colors represent a fusion between traditional tones and an innovative approach, mixing classic elements with modern touches to create an interesting visual balance.”

Mix It Up, Millennial Style

Colors aren’t the only influencing factor for Millennials; they are also drawn to a diverse range of styles, often incorporating elements of industrial and vintage design while emphasizing flexibility and multifunctionality. Current popular trends incorporate materials including wood, wallpaper, personalized neon, and natural fabrics to create spaces that reflect their individuality. The result is a unique aesthetic that blends retro, industrial urban, and eclectic elements.

Architectural Appeal

More and more builders are leaning into the modern farmhouse look. Some Millennials looking for single-family homes may gravitate toward a mixture of horizontal and vertical hardie boards—large format windows for natural light and decorative exposed wooden beams. Color also plays a role in this look, and some of these homes may feature black finish for the trim and gables.
